Rogue immigration solicitors exploiting vulnerable migrants by charging thousands for ‘substandard’ service

Rogue immigration solicitors are exploiting vulnerable migrants by charging thousands of pounds for legal representation that falls “far short” of basic professional standards, the High Court has ruled. Desperate immigrants are losing legitimate claims or given false hope about claims that are unwinnable, after paying large sums of money to solicitors who fail to deliver a professional service. A ruling found solicitors were instructing paralegals and unqualified people to draft applications which fall “well below acceptable standards” and which judges must reject as “unarguable and totally without merit”. This has…

Sessions says Justice Dept. will prosecute every person who crosses border unlawfully

A Border Patrol agent looks out over Tijuana, Mexico. (Gregory Bull/AP) Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Monday that the Justice Department will begin prosecuting every person who illegally crosses into the United States along the Southwest border. In a speech to law enforcement officials in Scottsdale, Ariz., Sessions said the Department of Homeland Security will begin referring such cases to the Justice Department for prosecution and that federal prosecutors will “take on as many of those cases as humanly possible until we get to 100 percent.” “If you cross the…

The Border Patrol Needs a Few Good Writers

Like many law enforcement agencies, the Border Patrol’s press releases are needlessly wooden. They routinely leave out colorful detail, often use excess verbiage, and are often badly written, as a recent press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP, which includes the Border Patrol) makes clear. The Border Patrol’s agents, in addition to enforcing the immigration law, often risk their necks to save the lives of law-breaking illegal aliens; often they are angels of mercy dressed in khaki. Their efforts warrant better prose than they get. Further, and more…

How Can You Have a Guaranteed Jobs Program Without Strict Immigration Enforcement?

Three prominent Democrats with White House aspirations – Vermont Socialist-cum-Democrat Senator Bernie Sanders, New Jersey Senator Corey Booker, and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand – have endorsed a policy of guaranteed jobs for Americans, and it appears that others in the party may start falling into line for fear of being left behind. Others are better positioned to lay out the pros and cons of such a position economically and socially; that’s beyond my purview. But one thing that’s puzzling me is this: on the most fundamental level, how can…

Donald Trump Is Waging War on Documented Immigrants

Joe Raedle The Trump administration is trying to deport as many people as possible, even if they’re here legally. Ever since he started running for president, Donald Trump has been pretty explicit: Immigrants are bad. He may follow that up with some soft backpedaling, saying that of course the good ones aren’t bad, but that’s the “some, I assume, are good people” that comes after the “they’re rapists.” It’s plausible deniability, giving him and his supporters wiggle room if anyone accuses them of being xenophobes or anti-immigration. But the Trump…
