The Great Immigration Divide, as Evidenced by Two House Immigration Bills

Two items from a recent “Immigration Bill Roundup” (partially behind a paywall) illustrate the great divide confronting our nation where the hot button issue of immigration is concerned. They are: Legalizing Immigrant Parents, Spouses Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, introduced legislation on April 13 to allow the Department of Homeland Security to grant lawful permanent resident status to the previously deported parents and spouses of U.S. citizens. Under current statute, noncitizens who attempt to enter the U.S. without authorization, who attempted illegal re-entry or who were deported cannot apply for citizenship in…

The White House is back-channeling an idea to conservatives that could force a government shutdown

Trump officials are encouraging conservative allies in Congress to prevent “sanctuary cities” from receiving federal funds as part of a spending bill that must pass next week to avoid another government shutdown. The most conservative wing of the House Republican conference supports the idea of defunding these cities, which, as Vox’s Dara Lind explained, limit when they’ll help federal immigration agents detain unauthorized immigrants. This faction is open to the idea of getting it into the spending bill. With the White House’s backing, their resistance could pressure House Speaker Paul…

On Wednesday, the Washington Post and POLITICO reported that the White House was weighing an option to support an upcoming spending bill that would include amnesty for illegal aliens shielded from deportation by the President Obama-created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)…

Two California Republicans trying to force House immigration votes

Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock). (Douglas Graham / Roll Call) Two Central Valley Republicans are trying to force an immigration debate this year, including on bills House Republican leaders don’t support. “We should have a full debate before the American people,” said the measure’s sponsor, Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock). “This forces the debate.” If passed, the resolution by Denham and Rep. David Valadao (R-Hanford) would invoke a little-known measure to bring four immigration reform bills to the House floor without the approval of committees or leadership. The bills include one favored…

To attract GOP moderates, House immigration bill could become more generous for DACA recipients

Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) (Photo By Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call) The lead author of a conservative immigration bill said Tuesday that he is discussing making the legislation more generous toward young immigrants who are now at risk for deportation in a bid to move it through the House. The bill sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and others would grant legal status to those who have been protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which President Trump has moved to cancel. But as written, Goodlatte’s bill would…

White House proposes arming teachers, backpedals on raising age to buy guns

The proposals, which come more than three weeks after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, also include a plan to establish a commission chaired by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos that will recommend policy and funding proposals for school violence prevention, including possible age restrictions on some firearms purchases. The commission does not have a set timeline of when it will report its findings, although an official said it would be within one year. “Today we are announcing meaningful actions, steps that can be taken right away to help protect students,” DeVos…

House to vote on school safety bill this week

Lawmakers are scheduled to vote Wednesday, exactly one month after the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting, on the “STOP School Violence Act of 2018,” which was introduced by Florida Republican Rep. John Rutherford, a former sheriff of Duval County. “STOP” is an acronym for “Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing.” The bill would attempt to curb school violence by providing more training for school officials and local law enforcement to respond to mental health crises, as well as, among other things, money to develop anonymous reporting systems for threats and deterrent…
